Town hall meetings, an essential component in local governance, offer employees and other stakeholders an opportunity to ask questions of leaders, and provide a chance for all constituents to be heard. By the Local Governance Act 2016, Act 936, section 40, the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly in partnership with Care International, organized its first town Hall meeting for the year.
The event which was chaired by the Chief of Akontombra Nana Kwabena Ebi II, witnessed the attendance of the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Richard Dela Darkey, and the Hon. Presiding Member, Mr. Isaac Entsie.
The meeting also brought together Traditional leaders from surrounding communities, Hon. Assembly Members, Heads of Departments and Staff of the Assembly, Farmer Based Organizations, Dressmakers and Trader unions, Clergy, and the general public.
In his welcome address, Nana Kwabena Ebi II thanked the District Assembly and CARE International for organizing the event. He mentioned that as custodians of the lands, it was necessary that the District Assembly in all their decision-making processes, involves the Traditional Authorities. He commended the management for their constant collaboration in all affairs and prayed for continuity. He also urged participants to be attentive and participatory in all discussions to ensure the success of the meeting.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Richard Dela Darkey expressed gratitude to the participants for attending the meeting. He noted that the District Assembly in its service delivery standards owed the citizenry the accountability of activities embarked upon in the district.
He said the citizenry constituted the Assembly’s major stakeholder in the development agenda, thus, necessary to engage them through mediums such as town hall meetings, DCE’s tour, and other stakeholder meetings to share ideas that would improve the general livelihood. He indicated that even though the meeting was the first of the year, the Assembly remains committed to organizing more stakeholder meetings to promote transparency and participation in governance.
In his concluding remarks, he thanked CARE Ghana for its continuous contributions to development in the district, notably, gender and women empowerment. He called for the cooperation of all participants to ensure success in the meeting.
In a powerpoint presentation, Mr. Suleman Jarick (Care International) highlighted some projects embarked on by Care-Cargill partnerships since its launch in 2008. He mentioned projects such as Rural Education (2008), prosperous cocoa-farming Communities (2013), sustainable and food secured world (2016), and supporting cocoa-farming communities in Ghana (2019).
He stated currently the project launched for the years 2022-2025 was Prosper III- improving livelihoods and Gender equality. He revealed that fifteen (15) communities in the Nsawora Area Council, benefitted from the project in the district. He noted that the project targeted a total of 95,200 direct participants being engaged for the period.
He said the scope of intervention focused on Women’s leadership and agency, Access to agricultural productive resources, and strategic partnerships and advocacy.
He concluded by seeking the District Assembly and stakeholder support in the smooth implementation of the project in the district.
In her presentation, Ms. Eunice Ennin (DPO) updated participants on the statuses of projects and programs approved in the 2023 Annual Action Plan of the Assembly.
She attributed the delay in the execution of most projects to the lack of funds. She however reiterated management’s commitments to undertake the projects when funds were available.
